Flicking through this year’s Webby Awars winners, I’m a bit baffled by the people’s voice for the employment category. Yes, Monster’s new career site looks a lot better than it did. And yes, it’s tweaked some of its features. But no, what they’re doing is not exactly ‘new’.

I’d say VisualCV – one of the other nominees – comes much closer to actually innovating on the recruitment front. But as people and voices go, Monster probably got a fair share from its truckload of employees.

I gave 8tracks a big thumbs up in the music category (didn’t win), and I love IBM’s Wordle (won ‘best typography’; something I’m definitely going to use more often – see image below).

Workshop @ Digital Pioneers Academy – 21st November 2008. Interactive set-up, positive vibe, tons of fun to do.

This workshop empowered the people who were there as much as it did me – and it left me with a lot of useful feedback.

The Digital Pioneers Academy coaches social, small-scale online enterprises looking to professionalize. For them, writing a business plan can be a daunting task. I wanted to simplify the business model concept by visualizing it – and to turn the prospect of working with it into a positive design challenge.

Below is the Slideshare presentation (some rights reserved – ). I adapted it after the workshop to give the pioneers a reference guide to flick through. Because I used their feedback to clarify some things, it’s as much theirs as mine.

Somewhere in between conventional films and open source collaborations like A Swarm of Angels, Late Fragment lets viewers weave together their own storyline, using their DVD-remote. Inspiration for the film’s multiple narrative, non-linear format comes from the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Peter Greenaway’s Tulse Luper VJ performance. And, drawing directly from a 2003 Danish film Switching, it’s not the first interactive scene-shuffling concept.

Sadly, the trailer doesn’t entice me all that much. Nor does the formulaic plot: the three ‘characters, unknown to one another as well as to themselves, would never have met were it not for…’ has pretty much been milked off (Inarritu managed to pull it off three times with Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel).

Still, delegating your editing skills like this makes for an interesting experiment in interactive viewing – not least because it finally turns the remote into more than a couchpotato facilitator. And if you do like the film, you’ll never need another – this one’s different everytime you watch it.
